Today is Bolludagur (Bun Day), an unusual day in the Icelandic cultural calendar. The custom is for children to decorate a short stick with colorful paper, and then use this bolludagsvöndur (bun day wand) to spank their parents and other grown-ups, while crying "bolla, bolla, bolla!" ("bun, bun, bun"). No, we are not making this up. The traditional fare is a cream bun. The Icelanders eat a million of these every year. Given that only about 330,000 people live in Iceland, we hope they don't eat them all today.
