The legendary hidden people (huldufólk) of Iceland are at their most prominent during the darkest days of winter. There's an old Icelandic tradition on New Year's Eve: families build bonfires and gather round them, singing songs about the invisible elves that live among the humans. According to old tales, the huldufólk have banquets and parties with singing and dancing at Christmas, and they visit their more distant friends and relatives at the turn of the year. If you want to try and spot them, head for the bonfires. If you don't see them, at least you'll be warm and in good company.
